You drilled the flashcards. You practiced addition every night before bed. Your child can rattle off 6 + 7 without blinking. And yet, the moment a problem looks slightly different \u2014 the moment it asks them to <em>think<\/em> rather than recall \u2014 they freeze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If that sounds familiar, you&#8217;re not alone. And more importantly, it&#8217;s not your child&#8217;s fault.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What&#8217;s missing isn&#8217;t effort. It&#8217;s something called <strong>number sense<\/strong> \u2014 and once you understand what it is, a lot of things about early math education suddenly make sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Difference Between Knowing and Understanding<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here&#8217;s a quick way to see the gap in action. Ask your child: <em>&#8220;What is 7 + 8?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A child relying on memory says: &#8220;15.&#8221; Full stop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A child with number sense says: &#8220;Well, 7 + 7 is 14, so 7 + 8 must be one more \u2014 15.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Same answer. Completely different thinking. The second child didn&#8217;t just retrieve a fact \u2014 they <em>reasoned<\/em>. And that reasoning ability is exactly what separates kids who thrive in math from kids who hit a wall around Grade 3 or 4, when the problems stop looking like things they&#8217;ve memorized and start requiring them to actually think.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Memorization is a ladder. Number sense is the ground beneath it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">So What Is Number Sense, Really?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Number sense is the ability to understand numbers \u2014 not just name them. It&#8217;s knowing that 14 is made of 1 ten and 4 ones. That 14 is closer to 10 than to 20. That you can get to 14 by adding 6 to 8, or by taking 1 away from 15, or by doubling 7. It&#8217;s flexible, connected thinking \u2014 the kind that doesn&#8217;t break down when the question changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Children don&#8217;t develop this by staring at flashcards. They develop it by playing with numbers, by being asked <em>how<\/em> they got an answer, by being given time to reason rather than just react. It builds slowly, through experience \u2014 and it is absolutely teachable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What It Looks Like in Practice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In <strong>Grade 1<\/strong>, a child with strong number sense can:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Break 10 apart in multiple ways (4+6, 7+3, 2+8) and understand they all equal the same thing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Count on from the larger number instead of starting from 1 every time<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Look at 9 objects and know there are 9 without counting each one individually<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In <strong>Grade 2<\/strong>, it looks like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Seeing 46 and immediately knowing there are 4 tens and 6 ones \u2014 not just &#8220;forty-six&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Skip counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s fluidly, from any starting point<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Comparing 38 and 83 and explaining <em>why<\/em> 83 is bigger, not just that it is<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice that none of these are about speed. They&#8217;re about depth. A child who truly understands place value will eventually be faster than one who memorized a rule they don&#8217;t understand \u2014 because understanding holds up under pressure, and memorization doesn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where Parents Can Make the Biggest Difference<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here&#8217;s the honest truth: the most powerful math tool you have isn&#8217;t a worksheet or an app. It&#8217;s a question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When your child solves a problem, ask them: <em>&#8220;How did you figure that out?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That one question does more for number sense than almost anything else. It signals that the <em>thinking<\/em> matters \u2014 not just the answer. It gives your child a chance to make their reasoning visible, which strengthens it. And it tells you exactly where they are, far more clearly than a score on a test ever could.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A few other things that genuinely help:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Make numbers physical.<\/strong> Before Grade 2, abstract symbols mean very little to most children. Grouping objects into tens, counting coins, measuring things around the house \u2014 these experiences build the intuition that formal math is built on top of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Use number lines.<\/strong> Number lines are one of the most underrated tools in early math. They make quantity visual and spatial, and they show relationships between numbers in a way that columns of digits simply can&#8217;t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Let them be wrong out loud.<\/strong> A child who guesses 52 when the answer is 25 has actually told you something valuable: they don&#8217;t yet understand place value. That&#8217;s not a failure \u2014 it&#8217;s information. Follow it with a question, not a correction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Simple Check-In to Try Tonight<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Write down the number 37. Ask your child:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>How many tens are in 37?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What number is 10 more than 37?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is 37 closer to 30 or 40?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If they answer confidently and correctly, you&#8217;re in great shape. If they hesitate \u2014 especially on that second question \u2014 that&#8217;s a gap worth giving some attention to. Not with alarm, but with intention. Number sense gaps are almost always fillable with the right kind of practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The children who do well in math long-term aren&#8217;t always the ones who memorized the most. They&#8217;re the ones who learned to trust their own thinking.
